Garment manufacturing follows poverty.
Fashion production is the 2nd most toxic process in the world second to petroleum by–products.
• Global fiber consumption between 2010 and 2020 increased by 30%; this translates from 76.4 million tons to 96.4 million tons in landfill waste.
• The reuse and recycling of clothing and textiles is the equivalent of removing 1.3 million cars from America’s highways and is equal to the impact of aluminum recycling.
• Textile recycling is more impactful than plastic recycling (670 thousand cars removed) and glass recycling (175,000 cars removed).
• The fashion industry is a large consumer of cotton with 40 billion pounds produced each year.
• To grow one kilogram, the crop demands 20,000 liters of water. To put this figure into perspective, that same kilogram of cotton produces enough fabric for one t-shirt and a pair of jeans.
• The crop also requires an exorbitant amount of chemicals contributing to 11% of pesticide and 24% insecticides.
